I am a printmaker focusing mainly on Linocut. I love to create artworks featuring wildlife and animals. I print my images in limited editions on my etching press or by hand burnishing using a variety of specialist papers and oil-based printing inks.

Jane Dignum is taking part in the upcoming Summer open studios

I studied printmaking at Leeds College of Art as part of a Fine Art BA course. I now have a printing studio at home where I create Linocuts although I sometimes experiment with other methods of printmaking too. I always have my camera and sketchbook with me in order to record visual notes when out and about. I use these photos and sketches back in the studio to create designs that I transfer onto artist’s Lino and carve out then print.
I print my images in limited editions on my etching press or by hand burnishing using a hand held Slama press. I enjoy using a variety of specialist papers and oil-based printing inks. Sometimes I apply colour by painting in details onto the printed linocut using an archival water-based medium but mostly I vary the colours by registering multiple plates and layering up the colours. Occasionally, I create collages from fragments of my prints.
I enjoy exploring patterns and textures and I sometimes create unusual effects by making printing plates out of found materials. In this way, I can achieve surprising outcomes and often this can be very unpredictable which makes it so exciting. It is the problem-solving side of printmaking as well as the option of allowing the process to evolve sometimes beyond your control which compels me to continue to explore this fascinating art form. I record my experiments into sketchbooks which offer an insight into how I create my work.
