About the Open Studios
North Yorkshire Open Studios is an annual event that invites artists and makers to open their studios, meet visitors, and sell their work directly to the public over the first two weekends in June. An optional winter open studios event also takes place during the first weekend in November.
North Yorkshire Open Studios operates as an annual membership programme. Selected artists join a county-wide creative community, and those who take part each year automatically qualify for the following year.
North Yorkshire Open Studios 2027 will take place on 5, 6, 12 and 13 June 2027. The winter event will take place on 6 and 7 November 2027.
The Ampleforth Exhibition, a showcase of approximately 65 artists in one venue, will take place from 31 July to 8 August 2027.
More about North Yorkshire Open Studios
Taking part
To be part of North Yorkshire Open Studios, all artists must apply through our website . Applications open in September for participation in the following year’s event. Artists residing and/or working in North Yorkshire, York and the Historical Ridings of North Yorkshire, whether emerging or established professionals in visual arts, are eligible to apply. North Yorkshire Open Studios encourages professional artists who are committed to creating and selling high-quality contemporary art or craft, regardless of experience levels.
Having one’s own studio is not a mandatory requirement. Artists without suitable creative spaces can collaborate with another North Yorkshire Open Studios artist who has a studio or seek appropriate alternative spaces, with North Yorkshire Open Studios assisting in finding shared venues if needed.
Participating in North Yorkshire Open Studios is free to apply. If accepted an annual fee of £160 with 10% on sales over £300 is charged.
Previously selected members from 2022 going forward can apply as a non-exhibiting artist to be featured on the website only (no brochure representation). The fee for this is £80.
For exhibiting artists, participation in the annual preview show is compulsory. In 2027 this will be held at Craven Arts in Skipton (drop off points for artists work will be provided across the regions).
Selection process
All artists are selected by independent curators. The selectors for 2026 were James Beighton, the Executive Director of Tees Valley Arts, Ian Scott Massie, watercolourist and printmaker and Rhian Roberts, the Curator of the Inspired by… gallery at Danby.
The event is organised as a not-for-profit venture, led by a Steering Group comprised of North Yorkshire artists from its membership.
