Featured Artist: Garth Bayley
NYOS Project Manager
Career path – I studied art at high school then after a career as a chef and restauranteur for several decades, I relocated to the UK in search of new and different opportunities. I stumbled across a pop-up shop and got chatting to one of the artists who suggested I should do open studios.
My first year was a disaster and I nearly gave up, but fast forward 15 years I’ve now shown work across the country, have been in some major shows, and sold work all around the world!
Inspiration – The world around me! I see something on the news or in nature and it becomes the starting point for a lot of my work. I also love theatre and dance. A common theme is colour and movement, be that through dancers, cycling or horse racing. Emotions evoked are also reflected in my work. I think my biggest influences are in my everyday life. It could be a walk or a show but it’s a moment that has meaning.
Process – My favourite medium is oils which I’ve been using for over 40 years. I love the vibrancy and the many ways you can use the paint from loose washes and glazes to bold impasto using a palette knife. I work across a range of mediums, and this helps keep me fresh. Inks have been a revelation to me as I can just let them flow and make ordinary subjects come to life. I’ve been known to throw everything including the kitchen sink at a painting!
I would like people who like my work to feel something or connect with the artwork. Art should be more than a colour to match the sofa. Don’t try and fit in but paint what you love as this will show and someone somewhere will relate. I’ve learnt to accept I’m not for everyone!
